Winning material
Not every tactic ends anything. These win a piece or an exchange and leave a position that still has to be played, which is what most real tactics look like. Learning to spot them is worth more than learning to spot brilliancies, because these are the ones that come up every game.
How to spot it
Count material after every line rather than looking for a knockout. The move that wins a clean piece is often quieter than the one that looks impressive, and taking it is nearly always right: an extra piece converts itself if you trade sensibly afterwards.
